If I were a musician, I imagine I'd be a bass guitar player, just hanging back, cool and professional, strumming away just out of the spotlight.

I'd figure you to be rhythm guitar. It's like a bassist but without the suicidal mien. A good bassist should always look like they would kill themselves immediately if their hands weren't holding their instrument just then. At least they aren't drummers.
