The Bleak House of Blahs 90210

Months ago, I asked Bing Image Generator to craft a portrait of Ron, Allan, Carrie, and me mowing the lawn in front of the Bleak House of Blahs. I tried to describe our younger selves as accurately as possible, but Bing insisted in turning all of us into fitness models. Of course the faces are completely wrong, because I haven't modeled any of us; I need a far better computer for that, and of course even then I wouldn't without consent.

That genie is probably out of the box, though. I'm sure it won't be long before anyone who's ever posted even a single photo of themselves on the internet will eventually find themselves artificially generated one way or another. Carrie herself, though, should be safe, as she's never had any social media presence. Good foresight!

Note, too, how primitive these images seem compared to what generative AI is capable of now. The singularity approaches...

Violent Greens Use Violent Means

Violent greens
Producing pepper pod people
Perfectly pseudopeople
Impenetrable cell walls a mystery for the chlorophyll-philes
Crooked rows seeding chaos

Garden of Earl-y Delights

Mom generously donated her leftover bedding plants to Sean, Sylvia, and me, so I brought our old planters to her place and we filled them up with flowers. Nice!

Mother's Day 2023

Sean and I have enjoyed a lovely two-day visit with Mom this weekend helping plant her garden. Mom had too many bedding plants, so she generously donated the leftovers to Sean and Sylvia and me.

And we enjoyed a really nice Mexican lunch at Habanero's in Leduc. Beautiful weather, too. Two very good days.

Happy Mother's Day, Mom!

Mom's Garden

I enjoyed a very nice visit with Mom early this morning, and as Moms often do, she gave me some vegetables from her garden to take home. I can't wait until the corn is ready.

Seed Pods

There's always something beautiful to admire in Mom's garden.

A Glimpse of Another Life

The Botanist (Maude Plante-Husaruk and Maxime Lacoste-Lebuis) is a fascinating look at resilience and innovation in post-Soviet Tajikistan, shown through a glimpse at the life of a clearly brilliant botanist, inventor, and grandfather, who builds a working hydroelectric generator from scrounged junk. The protagonist's face and hands are beautifully shot, revealing a person rich in history and character. To those who've never visited this part of the world (including me), the landscape might appear bleak and inhospitable; but this film asks us to look beyond the surface. It's worth the watch.

Two Empty Lawn Chairs

There's something very relaxing about this image of the Etsell farm shot in 1973. Those lawn chairs look like they're just waiting for someone to sit with a book and a lemonade. And see how vibrant the flowerbed was...

Mom’s Flowers

We went to see Mom today, and I was amazed that the seeds she sowed in her raised bed have blossomed into this amazingly tall and lush flower garden. It's really something.

Sean Trims a Bush

Today Sean and I tried our hand at landscaping, helping Mom to trim some bushes. Sean was daring enough to try the hedge trimmer; I stuck to shears. We each suffered some minor lacerations until Mom asked why we weren't wearing gloves. Putting the gloves on helped us avoid further injury, although I'm still finding sap in my leg and arm hair.

Garden of the Unknown

A scan of a slide shot in 1975 by one of my aunts or uncles, or possibly my maternal grandparents. I find it interesting that fallen birch trees form the garden's boundaries.

Golden Boughs

The tree outside our bedroom window was cast in golden light a couple of nights ago. The wildfires are no fun, but they certainly create some spectacular sunsets.
