A Musing Superman

I asked Gemini to create some random text for the thought balloon in this panel from Action Comics 300. Gemini figured out that this panel is from the issue where Superman is trapped in a future where Earth's sun has turned red, thus removing his powers. Hence, it generated some text reflecting Superman's worry about those he'll leave behind if he can't return to his own time. 

Al Plastino's artwork is really terrific throughout this classic Silver Age story, but this image of a brooding Superman really stands out. One can imagine the Man of Steel ruminating over any number of issues of cosmic importance...

The First Batmoble (Sort of)

It wasn't called a Batmobile, but as Jeff noted on Saturday, there was a "Batmobile" of sorts featured in Detective Comics #27, where Batman debuted back in 1939. Bruce Wayne's first car was the red coupe seen here in Hot Wheels form, parked next to, as it happens, the vehicle Superman famously smashed a few months earlier in Action Comics #1. 

Two famous first appearances of iconic superheroes, two first appearances of iconic vehicles linked to those characters. 1939 was quite a year.

Summing Up Superman

Way back in 1983, writer Marv Wolfman and artist Curt Swan captured the essential decency of Superman's character perfectly in Action Comics #543. When people ask me why Superman is my favourite character, I tell them it's not because of his super-strength or his heat vision or even super-ventriloquism (yes, that's a real power) - it's his fundamental goodness. Here Superman utterly defeats the diabolical Vandal Savage without even touching him. Technically I suppose Superman is guilty of wiretapping here, but if ever there was just cause, I'd say Savage's defamatory actions (seen over the past two issues) qualify. I love it when writers remember that Superman has brains as well as brawn, and that he looks for non-violent solutions whenever possible. I think he sets a pretty good example for a fictional character.
