White Flagged

Dido's "White Flag" has stayed with me since I first heard it, and it remains a favourite, even though it makes me profoundly sad. I can never be sure of how to read the song properly. On the one hand, it seems a bit pathetic; here's a smart, talented woman pining over a man, vowing that he's the only one she'll ever love, even if it means being alone forever. And yet, if she stays true to that vow, part of me really admires the purity of her passion and her determination. I guess I love the song because it feels authentic, revealing a truth little-remarked upon: there are people out there who spend their entire lives single, either because they never found the right person, they're genuine loners who don't feel any need to mate, or, like the character in this song, they found the right person but the love isn't reciprocated. (The music video, of course, intimates that the object of the singer's affections does indeed return them, but you can't tell that from the lyrics alone.)

In many ways, this song speaks to a very powerful emotion that I endured for much of my 20s. Unrequited love is painful, but there's also something sweet about it, and even, perhaps, noble, as long as you really do manage to keep it to yourself to spare the object of your affections the awkwardness of having to reject you. On the other hand, there's a strong vein of cowardice and passive aggressiveness weaved into that narrative, too.

Something to think about. And a good reminder to myself to reflect on how lucky I've been to have love since meeting Sylvia.

Last Resort

With the cancellation of Awake there's precious little top-notch genre television on the airwaves now, but I'm very intrigued by Last Resort, in which the crew of a US Navy sub goes renegade and founds their own nation. The concept sounds ridiculous, but the trailer - which you can view here - is quite taut and exciting, and the show comes from Angel writer and The Shield creator Shawn Ryan. Combine his writing chops with a cast that includes the T-1000 and Frank from Homicide: Life on the Streets and you have a potential winner, at least creatively. I doubt it will last longer than a half season, unfortunately; the public seems to have little appetite for high-concept dramas, and this looks like it will be pretty expensive to produce.

Forever Saying Goodbye

The best thing about working in politics is becoming friends with passionate idealists who really want to change the world for the better. The worst thing about working in politics is the high turnover. Today was Tanara McLean's last day as the Media Liaison for the Alberta Liberal Caucus.

Not only was Tanara great at her job, she also brightened up the office with her energy and enthusiasm. She was an extremely talented videographer and podcast producer; I'll miss those shows. But she came from the world of media and back to the world of media she returns. Pretty soon I'll be able to point to the TV and say, "Hey, I knew her!" Thanks for two great years, Tanara.

I would be remiss if I didn't also belatedly mention the departure of correspondence/public relations whiz Amanda Krumins, who left us a couple of months ago. Amanda's one of the smartest people I've ever worked with, and her refreshing candor always left an indelible impression at meetings. When she joined us back in 2007, I was finally able to talk about Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel at work without being looked at like a crazy person. It was a blast working with you, Amanda.

Change is, of course, the lifeblood of politics; such comings and goings are an indelible part of the political life. But it can be hard to lose the comfortable familiarity of fulfilling office camaraderie. Amanda, Tanara, Neil and so many others - I still think about you, and I hope you're all doing well, wherever you've chosen to travel.

Faces

While visiting Allan's MySpace page, I noticed that he had a "celebrity lookalike" photo collage posted. I thought I'd give it a try myself. Nearly half as good-looking as Alexis Denisof (from Angel, one of my favourite TV shows)- not bad.

On the other hand, if I use a different photo, I find out that I resemble...uh, hey, wait a minute -

Yeesh. Is the photo that effeminate - even with the five 'o clock shadow?

The Only Logical Choice

Sylvia and I will be getting married on August 4, 2007! Will our pairing be as classic as Nick and Nora? Green Arrow and Black Canary? Buffy and Angel? The Professor and Mary Ann? Gumby and Pokey? Charlie Brown and the Little Red-Haired Girl? It's impossible to say, but I look forward to finding out what kind of future we build together.

A little over two years ago, before I met Sylvia, I couldn't imagine ever being in this situation, and I suppose I can expect some ribbing for all the skepticism with which I treated romance. But now that the shoe is on the other foot, I'm happy to dine on some humble pie and enjoy my terrific fortune. Sylvia's a great catch, and I'm very glad that I took a risk when I met her and decided to be open to all the possibilities she offered.

Now the planning begins. Sylvia wants a girly wedding, while I want something a little more...eccentric. There's going to be a little give and take, pushing and pulling, and in the end I think we'll come up with something unique. In any event, it's going to be one heck of a party, and I know I'll be checking out Andrea's site more carefully for clues and tips on how to proceed.

Wish us luck!

Icing the Angel Cake

Well, my favourite show, Angel, is being cancelled. But at least I can enjoy quality episodes like "Smile Time" until that bitter day in May...

"I do not have puppet cancer!"

"See, my nose comes off."

"I'm gonna send your puppet ass back to Hell!"

Hee hee hee. (giggle)
