Technology Connections on Trinitron (Video)

Technology Connections is an excellent YouTube channel with always interesting and in-depth discussions on (usually old) tech. It's smart, funny, and fascinating. This episode is about Sony's venerable Trinitron picture tube. Does anyone remember picture tubes?

Wrath of Pixels

Here's something neat: animator Anson Call has created a stylized, TRON-like interpretation of the confrontation between the Reliant and Enterprise a la Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Fans of the film will recognize many key moments from the film, lovingly reinterpreted with fluidic choreography. Even the soundtrack evokes James Horner's original score, but recast in a technopop mould.

baremetalHW: Restoring Hot Wheels Toys on YouTube

This fellow restores and modifies old Hot Wheels toy cars and shares his knowledge through very understated but well-composed instructional videos. I don't collect Hot Wheels today, but when I was between the ages of about 3 and 7 I adored them. Watching these short vignettes brings back fond memories and allows me to marvel at the incredible talent and creativity that exists all around us.

Crushing Canadian Stuff on the Hydraulic Press Channel

Our Finnish friends at the Hydraulic Press Channel kindly celebrated Canada 150 by crushing some Canadiana in slow motion. I love these guys.

Grand Illusions

I've often expressed my gratitude for the invention of the Internet. It gives voice to so many talented creators who might otherwise have toiled in obscurity.

Grand Illusions is a YouTube channel in which a distinguished British fellow named Tim demonstrates the operation of a variety of marvellous old toys. It's an utterly charming channel that never fails to evoke feelings of warmth and serenity in me.

100 Years of Cinema

What I love most about the Internet is the way it makes it possible for independent creators to easily share their work with a worldwide audience. Of course, without traditional marketing, a lot of that content, no matter how excellent, goes unnoticed.

That's why I'm writing about One Hundred Years of Cinema, a YouTube channel featuring short videos of cinema innovations and history - one per year, starting in 1915. So far, the creator is up to 1929, so it may be some time before we get to see the conclusion, but it's a fun ride nonetheless.

If you're interested in cinema history, give one or two of the videos a try. I've embedded one of my favourites below.

Alert for Infochammel

This is the first listed on YouTube's Infochammel channel. It was put up four years ago, and since then it's garnered a little over 700 views. Other videos in the series have as few as a little over 100 views. I guess I'm not surprised, because Infochammel plays like one of those weird 3 am nightmares that aren't quite scary, but you know they could easily tilt that way with just a nudge.

I've been watching the videos in chronological order, and it's slowly breaking my mind. I encourage my braver friends to do the same.
