Manitoba Hunter Safety Instructor

I have vague memories of watching Mom and Dad using rifles to shoot tin cans in the forests of Leaf Rapids. This would have been before Sean was born, and might have only happened once, possibly twice. Mom and Dad had those two rifles for decades (along with Granddad's shotgun), and that's the only time I can recall them ever being used. Mom and Dad finally got rid of the rifles sometime in the 2000s. I think they probably only had them in case of bears or wolves; I certainly don't remember them being hunting enthusiasts, despite Dad being a safety instructor through the 1970s.

Another bit of family history I wish I'd asked about or written down before it was too late.

Special High Grade Zinc Ingots from Flin Flon

Sometime during the 1970s, a representative of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting in Flin Flon gave Mom and Dad two 99.99% pure zinc ingots. COME BACK, ZINC! Oh wait, it's right here.

Where I've Lived, and When: Part One

In 2014, we went back to Flin Flon and shot a photo of our old house.

A few years ago, not long after Dad died, I asked Mom if she remembered when we moved from Flin Flon, to Thompson, to Leaf Rapids, and finally to Edmonton. Yesterday, I found the post-it note upon which I jotted down the dates she gave me, allowing me to determine where I've lived, and when:

Flin Flon, Manitoba: February 1969 to July 1971
Thompson, Manitoba: July 1971 to September 1973
Leaf Rapids, Manitoba: September 1973 to March 10, 1979
Edmonton, Alberta (Millwoods): March 1979 to June 1979
Leduc, Alberta: July 1979 to September 1987
Edmonton, Alberta (Lister Hall, University of Alberta): September 1987 to April 1991

Flin Flon Bombers Hockey Puck

While Mom recovers from pneumonia, Sean and I have been helping around her place, cleaning up and so forth. I found this Flin Flon Bombers hockey puck in the basement; until I found it, I'd forgotten we had it. I imagine Mom and Dad got it sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s.

Cranberry Portage Evacuated

Cranberry Portage has been evacuated as a wildfire closes in on the tiny community. My paternal grandmother and her partner Val lived in Cranberry Portage for as long as I knew them; it lies just a few kilometers south of Flin Flon, my birthplace.

Cranberry Portage is barely a blip on the highway, home to just a handful of businesses and some dozens of homes; it's a peaceful, quiet, lovely corner of northern Manitoba. I hope it survives this latest crisis.

Grandma and Val's house in 2006, demolished after their deaths a few years back. Warm memories.

The Other Side of the Theatre

For most of the 1970s, I lived in northern Manitoba. My paternal grandmother lived in Cranberry Portage, so sometimes we drove a little further, to about 10 km south of Flin Flon, to the Big Island Drive-In. Because the summer days in northern Manitoba are so long, the shows tend to start pretty late. On a clear night, the stars were amazing; light pollution was, and is, pretty low up there. These days you listen to the movie's audio via your FM tuner, but back then we had to attach giant metal speakers to the window, and boy, were they heavy, at least for a small child like me. There was something really special about sitting in the front seat between Mom and Dad, sharing popcorn, a small soda clutched in one hand.

I believe I saw at least three movies at Big Island, but I only remember two for certain: Heroes, starring Henry Winkler as a suffering veteran of the Vietnam War, and The Other Side of the Mountain, a drama based on the true story of skier Jill Kinmont. All I remember of the third film is a woman in a small brown room sitting at a piano while composing a song.

I feel as though I also went to a drive-in theatre in Edmonton once, but I can't say for certain; I certainly don't remember what film I might have seen.

The Big Island Drive-In remains open to to this day, so if I ever head back to Flin Flon, I won't let the opportunity to see a movie there pass me by. And wow, check out the concession offerings

A Fishy Culinary Tradition

Whose idea was it to add breading or batter to fish? Fish is delicious when fried or seared, rich in flavour and texture. Breading it just masks the flavour and makes the whole dish feel much heavier than it should.

Maybe I'm spoiled. Mom and Dad used to catch fresh fish from the pristine lakes of northern Manitoba and clean and fry the fillets right at the campground. The pickerel and trout they prepared in those days remains my favourite meal of all time. All fish since has paled in comparison.

Even so, I can still enjoy fish if it's not wrapped in a casing of fried lard and butter.

Fish: better without the batter.

Flower Child

I haven't yet touched up this photo. The negative was in pretty rough shape. It's me in Flin Flon, presumably sometime in the early 1970s. We had that kitchen table for decades.

USS Flin Flon

Here's another finished starship for A Call to Arms: Starfleet. This time it's the U.S.S. Flin Flon, NCC-1969. This time around, the decals on the nacelles and dorsal side turned out a bit better than the feature decal on the ventral side of the saucer. As you can see, it's somewhat misaligned, but when I got it into this position I figured I'd better stop or risk ruining the decal. It should look fine on the playing surface anyway.

All the Colours of Flin Flon

Maybe not all the colours. It's the Flin Flon Station Museum! Shot on an overcast day back in 2009.

Snow Place Like Home

The author in a snowsuit in Thompson sometime in 1971 or 1972.
There's a lot more snow there today. Wear your mittens!

I'm seeing reports on Twitter and Facebook that my old home towns of Flin Flon, Thompson, Leaf Rapids and Cranberry Portage are under siege from snow, with Leaf Rapids in particular getting at least 60 cm of snow with up to 15 cm more on the way by day's end. Winter always came thick and fast in northern Manitoba. I hope everyone's hunkered down with supplies and a good book or two.

Flin Flon Flashback

Here I am at perhaps a year or two of age in the house in Flin Flon, which still exists today. The green couch and coffee table were with the family for decades, as was the piece of patio furniture on the right (I'm not sure why it's indoors in this photo).

The negative is in rough shape, but I've done my best to clean up the scan. It's still blurry, but that may be inherent blur from the day the shot was taken, sometime in...1970? I wish the image were sharp enough to make out the yellow box next to the toy telephone.

70s Still Life

Mom or Dad shot this photo of flowers set against glorious early 1970s wallpaper and drapes in our Flin Flon home. We had that end table for many years; I think we finally disposed of it sometime in the late 1990s.

Those of my friends playing Spirit of '77 should try to imagine our characters living with this sort of decor. It's actually kind of understated for the era...

My First 10 Films?

After so much time has passed it's difficult to tell the difference between real memories and reconstructed ones, but cataloging the movies I've seen via Letterboxd would seem to reveal the films I was first exposed to. I'm about 75 percent certain that I saw these movies close to their original release dates or during re-releases either at the movie theatre in the Leaf Rapids Town Centre or (in the case of The Other Side of the Mountain) at the drive-in in Flin Flon. Here's the list, starting with the earliest first, with the dates I believe I saw them in brackets:

The Towering Inferno (December 1974)
Escape to Witch Mountain (March 1975)
The Return of the Pink Panther (May 1975)
When Worlds Collide (June 1975)
The War of the Worlds (June 1975)
The Apple Dumpling Gang (July 1975)
The Other Side of the Mountain (July 1975)
The Four Musketeers (September 1975)
The Hindenburg (December 1975)
The Bad News Bears (April 1976)

It's possible that I saw The Apple Dumpling Gang a couple of years later on a Wonderful World of Disney broadcast; in any event, I remember discussing the film with my cousins William and Carol Anne while we were all living in Leaf Rapids, so I must have seen it between 1975 and 1979. I remember being bored at the drive-in during The Other Side of the Mountain, and bored and then horrified by The Hindenburg in Leaf Rapids. I also recall getting scared out of my wits by the When Worlds Collide/The War of the Worlds double bill at the theatre in Leaf Rapids. For 75 cents, by the way, I saw both movies and I got a soda and popcorn.

I have the vaguest memories of The Four Musketeers and the two Pink Panther films. I'm certain I saw at least one of the Panther films, and possibly both, in Leaf Rapids, and I have a feeling I saw The Four Musketeers there, but I can't claim to be absolutely sure it was one of the first ten.

Val Head

Val Head has died, and I'll be going to Cranberry Portage to pay my respects on Monday. Val took care of Grandma for many decades - longer than I've been alive. Val took us boating and fishing on the gorgeous lakes of northern Manitoba, taught me how to perform a moose call and in many ways acted as a surrogate grandfather, since unfortunately Dad's father died before my brother and I could meet him. Val always impressed me with his toughness, and frankly I'm shocked and saddened that he passed only a few months after Grandma. But I'm grateful that they shared many happy years together, and I'm sorry he's gone.

The Earl-iest Day

Inspired by Leslie's Wayback Wednesday/Throwback Thursday posts, here's what I believe to be the first photo of me ever taken, sometime in May of 1969:
Needless to say I don't remember anything about this event, but I presume the shot was taken in Flin Flon, Manitoba. The original print was in really bad shape, and I must say I'm quite proud of the results of my restoration efforts.

The Long Road Home

Just some more experimentation with time-lapse on the iPhone and Magix video editing software.
